Dead Valve Index after 5 months | Summary of all the problems ive had with the Index

TLDWI (bobotron) made a video on this but for those of you who would prefer text format this is for you! :)Video can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a83dUBpfQN4Really appreciate your support <3✭ ๐—ฉ๐—ฎ๐—น๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ ๐—œ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐˜… | ๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—บ ๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ | https://store.steampowered.com/valveindexGood Morning, gud day and all the good stuff!5 months of daily use in my index and ive come across a rather large sum of issues which you need to know if you are getting an index๐—ข๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜„๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ฒ ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜๐˜€ ๐—ด๐—ฒ๐˜ ๐—ด๐—ผ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ดIn my first review i stated that anyone who can get an Index Kit should get one! its a very high end Hardware Kit with great specs with one of a kind featuresand that's true but I realize now that people like myself who live in unsupported regions really should weigh the pros and cons because now knowing that when buying an Index that as some point garenteed you WILL have issues with it.. you gotta ask yourself whether you will be able to get it RMA'ed and how much it will cost you to send it backbut ill discuss the RMA process after ive listed all the issues ive had:๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜„๐—ถ๐˜๐—ต ๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐˜At the beginning the initial issues i was having were minor but notableFirst i started to notice the rubber insert around the lenses was coming off, this is due to the glue failing to hold it in, in my case its not serious. a simple wipe to get the sticky glue off and you're good to go, you don't need to apply and glue and i urge you not to apply any glue yourself, it is not needed. The insert is more than capable of staying where it is without any glueNext up is my facial interface, mine is completely falling apart however largely due to user error. Valve states very strict guidelines for washing the interface but i gave up and resorted to throwing it into the washing-machine. may come as a given but DO NOT DO THIS.. I knew was i was doing and did it full knowing that id need to replace it at some point, which is why i bought a VR cover replacementStill, looking at the stock interface I've noticed its quite well constructed but only being held together by glue..no stitches.. just glueso.. please be gentle with it!Another issue is the tether clip that is the most common thing to break on the index.. mine broke.. and im not joking when i say.. i was just putting the headset on.. noting fancy.. literally just putting the headset on my head the clip snapped off๐—”๐˜‚๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ผ:As for audio issues i haven't had any, in fact its one thing that other people with the index seem to have issues the most with but with my headset i haven't had any issues with the index speakers or otherwise known as BMRs๐—Ÿ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜€๐—ฒ๐˜€:Lenses.. they are delicate and scratch easily.. so please do not EVER use your shirt to wipe them clean. Only use the microfiber cloth that comes with the index! I used my shirt once to gently wipe the lenses and ive now got a very faint scratch on the side of one lens๐—œ๐˜๐˜€ ๐—›๐—ข๐—ง:moving onto heat.. and i mean temperature heat not the sweaty, flustering kindThe index is HOT.. but its easy to fix, simply take off the see-through plastic shroud off and its fixed.. ez game ez life๐—–๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—น๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€:Onto the controllers..just after 2 months in i already had drifting in my right controllerFor those unaware, the term drifting is used to describe the action of the analog stick bugging out and inputting a direction even if the analog stick is centeredthen on month 3 my left controller started drifting at this point i contacted valve support and they will suggest you set a dead-zone. Today im using my controllers at a 50% dead-zone.. that means ive lost 50% of analog input to cater for the drift..and somewhere between then and now my right controllers analog stick completely lost left directional input and both controllers thumb sensors started to become faulty๐—•๐—ฎ๐˜€๐—ฒ-๐˜€๐˜๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€:As for my base-stations, one of which ive had minor issues with it not starting correctly but its an extremely rare occurrenceI do know that Thrillseeker also had a similar issue but his issue was the red light of death๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—œ๐˜€๐˜€๐˜‚๐—ฒ:Onto the main issue I believe the reason for my dead headset is a faulty cable, I started getting visual static which escalated to audio pops and then to black screening.Right now when i try launch SteamVR i get 1 of 2 messages both stating that my headset is not connectedThere are 4 other things i want to mention but ill list them at the end๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—บ ๐—ฆ๐˜‚๐—ฝ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜:but now onto the most important make or break topic.. steam support๐— ๐˜† ๐—˜๐˜…๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒAfter contacting steam they have agreed to replace my Headset and controllers which im very great full for! Just unfortunate that it will cost me 200$ to ship it from South Africa to the US and an extra 200$ from the US back to South Africa :(But to give more depth on the RMA processFor those of you in supported regions valve will replace any part free of charge and without any question and will organise delivery and collection for you. you will however have to supply the product serial numbers for the item you are having issues with. and of course at the end of the process you will be required to send back the defective product. For those of us in unsupported regions valve will not organise shipping and will not accept international returnsAlternatively you will have to ship it to someone in a supported region and have them post it to valve, at that point valve will commence the RMA process and replace any defective partsA side note: as far as i believe you cant take an Index bough in the US and RMA it in the UK. unfortunate but its the way it is..What i will say however is that Steam support is incredible.. even in these times of a global pandemic steam support is very quick to respond and extremely friendly.. so to all the people working tirelessly at valve to bring us our headsets.. thank you!.. we really appreciate you!!SOOOooo in the end.. is the Valve Index worth it? Yes.. because there unfortunately is nothing out there at this point in time which offers the same high quality and features as the index for $1000In my opinion if you live abroad the best thing you could do is get the standalone headset and settle for more robust vive wands and ..mayyyybbbe.. commit to the 2.0 base stations. this way you can rule out at least some of the issues4 extra mentions:No.1 - The lens glare.. After a while you do get used to it but the lens glare is extrely blatant. Now this is due to the Index's lens system. Its manageable but definitely notable for those getting an IndexNo.2 - Comfort.. The index has incredible weight displacement.. It is the most comfortable headset ive ever used by far ! Tho while discussing the comfort, the fabric on the foam is a mission to try clean.. one thing that would have made the index that one bit better is if the foam padding on the back of the headset was held on by magnets as well, this way we could take it off to clean it. unfortunately there is no way to remove the rear paddingNo.3 - The displays are perfect.. although they dont have the darkest blacks and most vibrant colors they are absolutely fine in my opinion.. Its pretty well known by now that the valve index has incredible resolution and an almost non-existent screen door... and its true. the index is amazing. im almost lost for words. In fact words alone dont give it justice.. The valve index is the true stepping stone to a true Virtual realityNo.4 - Reliability.. after discussing issues with every part of the index kit its really got you asking why its still so highly regarded.. well thats easy.. there literally is nothing like it on the market. some headsets may come close but fall short on curtain aspects such as refresh rate or resolution or even cost more than double the price of the index which really needs to change.. there needs to be more competition in the market for high end VR hardwareOtherwise i hope this was informative and assisted your decision! If you wish to add anything to the discussion and mention anything i may have missed please put it in the comments and ill compile it at the bottom of this postAnyways please keep safe, and ill see you in the next one!

Good Morning, gud day and all the good stuff!

5 months of daily use in my index and ive come across a rather large sum of issues which you need to know if you are getting an index

In my first review i stated that anyone who can get an Index Kit should get one! its a very high end Hardware Kit with great specs with one of a kind features

and that's true but I realize now that people like myself who live in unsupported regions really should weigh the pros and cons because now knowing that when buying an Index that as some point garenteed you WILL have issues with it.. you gotta ask yourself whether you will be able to get it RMA'ed and how much it will cost you to send it back

but ill discuss the RMA process after ive listed all the issues ive had:

๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜„๐—ถ๐˜๐—ต ๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐˜

At the beginning the initial issues i was having were minor but notable

First i started to notice the rubber insert around the lenses was coming off, this is due to the glue failing to hold it in, in my case its not serious. a simple wipe to get the sticky glue off and you're good to go, you don't need to apply and glue and i urge you not to apply any glue yourself, it is not needed. The insert is more than capable of staying where it is without any glue

Next up is my facial interface, mine is completely falling apart however largely due to user error. Valve states very strict guidelines for washing the interface but i gave up and resorted to throwing it into the washing-machine. may come as a given but DO NOT DO THIS.. I knew was i was doing and did it full knowing that id need to replace it at some point, which is why i bought a VR cover replacement

Still, looking at the stock interface I've noticed its quite well constructed but only being held together by glue..no stitches.. just glue

so.. please be gentle with it!

Another issue is the tether clip that is the most common thing to break on the index.. mine broke.. and im not joking when i say.. i was just putting the headset on.. noting fancy.. literally just putting the headset on my head the clip snapped off

๐—”๐˜‚๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ผ:

As for audio issues i haven't had any, in fact its one thing that other people with the index seem to have issues the most with but with my headset i haven't had any issues with the index speakers or otherwise known as BMRs

๐—Ÿ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜€๐—ฒ๐˜€:

Lenses.. they are delicate and scratch easily.. so please do not EVER use your shirt to wipe them clean. Only use the microfiber cloth that comes with the index! I used my shirt once to gently wipe the lenses and ive now got a very faint scratch on the side of one lens

๐—œ๐˜๐˜€ ๐—›๐—ข๐—ง:

moving onto heat.. and i mean temperature heat not the sweaty, flustering kind

The index is HOT.. but its easy to fix, simply take off the see-through plastic shroud off and its fixed.. ez game ez life

๐—–๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—น๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€:

Onto the controllers..just after 2 months in i already had drifting in my right controller

For those unaware, the term drifting is used to describe the action of the analog stick bugging out and inputting a direction even if the analog stick is centered

then on month 3 my left controller started drifting at this point i contacted valve support and they will suggest you set a dead-zone. Today im using my controllers at a 50% dead-zone.. that means ive lost 50% of analog input to cater for the drift..

and somewhere between then and now my right controllers analog stick completely lost left directional input and both controllers thumb sensors started to become faulty

๐—•๐—ฎ๐˜€๐—ฒ-๐˜€๐˜๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€:

As for my base-stations, one of which ive had minor issues with it not starting correctly but its an extremely rare occurrence

I do know that Thrillseeker also had a similar issue but his issue was the red light of death

๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—œ๐˜€๐˜€๐˜‚๐—ฒ:

Onto the main issue I believe the reason for my dead headset is a faulty cable, I started getting visual static which escalated to audio pops and then to black screening.Right now when i try launch SteamVR i get 1 of 2 messages both stating that my headset is not connected

There are 4 other things i want to mention but ill list them at the end

๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—บ ๐—ฆ๐˜‚๐—ฝ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜:

but now onto the most important make or break topic.. steam support

๐— ๐˜† ๐—˜๐˜…๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ

After contacting steam they have agreed to replace my Headset and controllers which im very great full for! Just unfortunate that it will cost me 200$ to ship it from South Africa to the US and an extra 200$ from the US back to South Africa :(

But to give more depth on the RMA process

For those of you in supported regions valve will replace any part free of charge and without any question and will organise delivery and collection for you. you will however have to supply the product serial numbers for the item you are having issues with. and of course at the end of the process you will be required to send back the defective product.

For those of us in unsupported regions valve will not organise shipping and will not accept international returns

Alternatively you will have to ship it to someone in a supported region and have them post it to valve, at that point valve will commence the RMA process and replace any defective parts

A side note: as far as i believe you cant take an Index bough in the US and RMA it in the UK. unfortunate but its the way it is..

What i will say however is that Steam support is incredible.. even in these times of a global pandemic steam support is very quick to respond and extremely friendly.. so to all the people working tirelessly at valve to bring us our headsets.. thank you!.. we really appreciate you!!

SOOOooo in the end.. is the Valve Index worth it? Yes.. because there unfortunately is nothing out there at this point in time which offers the same high quality and features as the index for $1000

In my opinion if you live abroad the best thing you could do is get the standalone headset and settle for more robust vive wands and ..mayyyybbbe.. commit to the 2.0 base stations. this way you can rule out at least some of the issues

4 extra mentions:

No.1 - The lens glare.. After a while you do get used to it but the lens glare is extrely blatant. Now this is due to the Index's lens system. Its manageable but definitely notable for those getting an Index

No.2 - Comfort.. The index has incredible weight displacement.. It is the most comfortable headset ive ever used by far ! Tho while discussing the comfort, the fabric on the foam is a mission to try clean.. one thing that would have made the index that one bit better is if the foam padding on the back of the headset was held on by magnets as well, this way we could take it off to clean it. unfortunately there is no way to remove the rear padding

No.3 - The displays are perfect.. although they dont have the darkest blacks and most vibrant colors they are absolutely fine in my opinion.. Its pretty well known by now that the valve index has incredible resolution and an almost non-existent screen door... and its true. the index is amazing. im almost lost for words. In fact words alone dont give it justice.. The valve index is the true stepping stone to a true Virtual reality

No.4 - Reliability.. after discussing issues with every part of the index kit its really got you asking why its still so highly regarded.. well thats easy.. there literally is nothing like it on the market. some headsets may come close but fall short on curtain aspects such as refresh rate or resolution or even cost more than double the price of the index which really needs to change.. there needs to be more competition in the market for high end VR hardware

Otherwise i hope this was informative and assisted your decision!

If you wish to add anything to the discussion and mention anything i may have missed please put it in the comments and ill compile it at the bottom of this post

Anyways please keep safe, and ill see you in the next one!
