nobody accepts my friend requests, even recently by someone who ASKED me to add them on facebook. do some people not get notifications for friend requests or something? not even half the requests i send get a response one way or the other

i know it sounds like im just being ignored by everyone, which is what i thought every time i tried to add someone. but recently a relative of mine asked me to add them on facebook so they could see something on my page, and as of now, it hasn't been accepted. it doesnt make sense that rarely people will see friend requests. about 1/3 of people actually end up adding me back, which is weird because i know and interact with these people on a daily basis and they dont act like they dont like me. is it hard to see a friend request or something? have you ever accidentally ignored a friend request?
