Hi r/virtualreality! I'm thinking about buying a used Samsung Odyssey for a variety of reasons and I have some questions. First, some background info.
I have been interested in VR for a long time and HL:A's reveal finally convinced me to commit. Thankfully I already have a Ryzen 5 1600, a GTX 1060 and 16 GBs of RAM so I only need to get a headset to run HL:A at minimum settings.
I had a chance to try the HTC Vive for an hour, roughly a year ago. I use prescription glasses and the Vive could easily fit the frame I currently use. I also used the IPD adjustment but it wasn't really required, still nice to have. The Vive's visual quality also seemed pretty good but the only other VR I tried was one of those cheap plastic phone VR headsets so what do I know.
Why am I buying an Odyssey instead of an Odyssey+? Well, I live in Turkey and exports are heavily taxed. I found a used Odyssey in good condition for 2000 Liras, which is around 350 USD (yeah, I know). Cheapest used Odyssey Pluses go for 3750 Liras or more, around 650 USD. Retailers sell new headsets but that's obviously not an option since even used headsets are absurdly overpriced.
Lastly, I found a couple of used Vives in good condition for around 3000 Liras or 525 USD.
So, finally, those questions:
-
Is the Odyssey comfortable with glasses? I heard it's got some issues with those weird nose flaps, is it really such a big deal especially with glasses?
-
How is the Odyssey's visual quality compared to the Vive? Just reading the specs lead me to believe that the Odyssey is much better but I'd like to know what others think.

Even buying an Odyssey for 2000 Liras is a major hit on the bottom line, another 1750 for just an anti-SDE screen and a little bit more comfort doesn't seem worth it. I could maybe get a used Vive, would that be a significant upgrade over the Odyssey or is it not worth 1k Liras/175 USD? To be honest, I'd rather put that money towards a better graphics card.
